Cuff Bracelet – Thrifted

This weekend (starting on Friday) was a nightmare! The two boys in my life were sick as can be. I’ll
spare you the detail, but will let the title of my post and your imagine fill in the blanks. Hint: it has
nothing to do with one of my favorite childhood tales about little pigs. More like a swine flu times two.
I have somehow (knock-on-wood) dodged the bullet.
These outfit photos were taken last week on a rainy, but much healthier household. My outfit was
inspired by this Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent look, which I also featured on a Friday, I’m in Love post,
here. If you missed it, check it out for other rich, jewel tone inspirations. I thought my leaf print sheer
cardigan was the perfect homage to a very fall day. Little C is wearing a similar color scheme, by
coincidence. I’m not in the habit of matching our outfits. Promise.
Hope you had a better weekend than we did and here’s to a new week! Thank goodness it’s Monday.

Oh! Also of note, these are the first pants I’ve hemmed, as well as, taken in the pant legs on my own.
Quite an accomplishment for me because I don’t sew well–or at all. In the five years that I’ve had my
sewing machine, it’s been used only 3 times (couch pillow, hemmed curtains and these pants). I’ve
collected tutorials forever and these pants sat in my closet for over a year after I decided they were
too long for rolling the cuffs.
It’s blogs like Megan Nielsen and Cotton & Curls that have inspired me to “just do it” already! They are
both very approachable (and mom’s, too) and show that the best way to learn is to practice. It was a
little daunting to take on this project and I had to redo my first pant leg because the side seam was
crooked. Thankfully, it was an easy fix by undoing the hack job with a seam ripper and resewing a
straighter line. A slimmer pant and shorter length, makes this girl very happy!

Messy low chignon, with twists and lots of bobbies.

Last Seen Wearing Sheer Cardigan with: Coral Tunic Dress // 70′s Style, Wide Legged Jeans

This is such a beautiful look; the teal and orange color combination is fantastic, and that sheer cardigan is such a special find! I really adore the print on it. Congratulations on hemming your pants, I need to fix a hem on one pair but am so nervous to give it a try!
These are such beautiful photos. The photo of you and Little C is so cute, definitely worthy of a photo frame! Sorry to hear about your sickies over the weekend. Here’s to a fresh start
That sheer cardigan gets me eveytime you’ve worn it. Very pretty print and colors.
The sheer cardigan is definitely one of my most favorite thrift finds! Can’t believe it took me months to wear it and I love that it was less than $2.
Oh you poor thing! Both boys sick! (and men can be such babies when they’re ill!) You look fastastic in these pics! Great work on the pants…I have a pile of stuff to hem, but no sewing machine…
Yep. That sums it up, April. I think it’s because my Hubby rarely gets sick and when he is… it’s like the worse experience–ever. But I can’t blame him this time. It was pretty dang bad. As in, we thought he might need to go to the ER. Scary! Both are doing WAY better, now.
I’m glad you survived the sickness storm! Also, I love how great your indoor photos look. Mine turn out terrible and I have to dash outside during breaks in the rain. Lastly, I am going to show up on your doorstop (hah, if I knew where that was, I’d be creepy) and demand that you teach me to make my hair do cool stuff.
Sarah, thanks for the compliment on my indoor photos. Sometimes shooting inside makes for softer light than outdoor and I like this quality. A couple tips: (1) natural light, no flash if possible (2) a tripod or steady surface. Also, maybe play around with the different auto settings on your camera to see how it affects the brightness and color.
P.S. As for my hair. I mess with it and sometimes get lucky. Really not an expert at all! The more I play, the better I’m getting at figuring out a technique, but honestly, if you asked me to recreate a look (this look), it wouldn’t be the same. Just like my cooking. I’m a great cook, but don’t measure anything so it’s sometimes hard to make it the same twice.
Teal and burnt orange (and chocolate brown) were our wedding colors! Congrats on the sewing. Proud of you!
YAY! I’m loving all things teal these days. Here I go again with a color of the week binge!
These photos look beautiful, love your leaf shirt. Great job with the pants too! Sewing can be really intimidating. Just remind yourself that it’s only thread & fabric.
I hope they are feeling better and that you stay well.
Sorry that your boys are feeling poorly
Thanks, Loren! You’re right…it is just fabric and thread. Having successfully hemmed and taken in the pants has only given me more motivation to try other things. I totally screwed up my first leg, but realized it wasn’t a huge issue, as I could correct the mistake. It’s a good thing I’m a fast learner and I don’t give up easily!!
i love these photos and you look so comfortable in your home! you look great in teal and this thrifted top is beauiful!
cute & little
Gorgeous color combination! I particularly enjoy thrifting something handmade … I always like to wonder who made it and where they wore it! (I suspect the last thrift find featured on my blog was made by a 1970s grandma).
Hoping your boys are feeling better!
As always, you look fantastic!!!
sorry to hear you had a sick weekend!
Here’s to a new yummy week! (albeit I’m a day late… it’s still early!) You are so talented with making/ restyling thrifted clothing! I am at awe at how gorgeous your handmade tank and cardi are!
These pictures are so inviting, I love your outfit and your home looks lovely! That’s too bad the boys we’re sick that’s no fun it’s just this time of year thing.
Thanks Savannah! The living room is my fave spot with a comfy couch and lots of natural light!
beautiful coral ring! somehow, us moms are immune to a lot of the germs floating around our homes…uh, until we get sick
your son is a stylish one, too! my son is usually running around in his BVDs and tees because it’ so hot here!
[oomph.]
You’re Invited: fall in love with mark.
Ack, hope everyone’s feeling better! And I love the matching outfits. Too cute.
Also: I’m super impressed that you hemmed your own pants. My relationship with sewing is about the same (have a machine, sits there while I collect a lot of tutorials, sits there a while more…), but I’m pretty terrible with straight lines, so even though I theoretically could do my own, I still fork over $12 to a seamstress for pretty much every pair of pants I buy!
Oh my. You are the most beautiful. Honestly–you have an angel’s face. And your children. Ahhh! I know where they got their looks! I absolutely adore your hair here. It’s great. I love that sheer cardigan! So perfect for a warm fall day!
I recently bought a sewing machine at a garage sale for 20$ and haven’t used it yet. I don’t know how! I have to learn, haha!
You look gorgeous in this post Van!
For some reason, the last couple of years, everyone in my household has gotten sick but me, and they’re all sick at the same time or withing a couple days of each other but I don’t catch what they have. It must be a mommy thing.
Good for you, Van! I have to tell you, I love sewing, although I’m not great at it. I don’t own a machine and so it makes it impossible to practice. I was going, each week to my lesson studio to work on my projects and that became cumbersome. You’ll be great with it! BTW.. that first image of you on this post is absolutely breathtaking. I picture it on a bio or the “about author” sections of a book. Really lovely. I think your photography is fantastic. So crisp and clean! I love it.
