Groundbreaking news. I love layering.
It’s great how one pop of color can dramatically change the mood of an outfit. I lived in this sheer top and black
pants for two three days but altered the cardigan, coat and shoes–each variation made it feel like a new outfit. So easy.
During the winter, 9 out of 10 times, I’ll wear a chunky sweater or heavier coat and scarf/hat combo. To avoid frumpy,
the key to layering is balance. If soft, sheer or light weight are in the description of an item, it’s for me. If I can’t move
and sweat walking 3 feet from my closet to the mirror, furget-it. If I go chunky/heavy with the outerwear, I go light
layers on my basic outfit and vice versa.
These were photographed on a day that went from cold and dry to cold and rain.
I can’t very well go out in the rain, wearing a chunky, faux fur sweater–unless I want to look like a drowning rat.
This military style coat did the trick and paired with my trusty wide brimmed, wool hat, I felt like an urban ranger lady,
putting out work fires. With only one meeting last week, this meant most days were spent in front of my computer
hammering out design projects. Little human interaction, means I have no quarrels about wearing the same basic outfit,
day in and day out, (at least I wasn’t in house clothes). The boys went 2 hours south to visit Little C’s grandparents for
a couple days and I only left the house a few times to run to the store so I couldn’t be bothered with putting a whole lot
of effort into my outfits. These end up being some of my favorite looks. Maybe I should be holed up in my office more
often? What’s been your go-to outfit lately?

I absolutely love all of these looks, but that coral sweater cardigan looks insanely cozy. I love its texture!!
Well, my uniform is usually cords and a sweater. I’ve been on the hunt for great sweaters in all kinds of colors and patterns (although I certainly bypassed the sequined Christmas sweaters at the thrift store this weekend).
Cute! Love all the looks, and your hat is adorable!
Both looks are absolutely amazing! These are the types of outfits that I like to wear in the fall, comfy and lots of layers. My go to looks always revolve around boots and blazers or cardigans.
Lovely looks, Van! No judging for wearing the same basics for a few days…if it’s working, go with it! (I so love that sheer top!!) I’ve been living in something similar…skinny jeans, button downs, and cardis. And if I didn’t end up covered in spit-up or other baby fluids by the end of the day, I’d be able to wear my jeans more and do laundry less!
All the layers here are fantastic, I love it. I love that about cooler weather, that I get to pile on the jackets & accessories. The colors here all play off each other so nicely too.
Van..I am the same way..the colder it gets the more layers I seem to be adding! Love it!

I love your rain outfit most of all! It’s wonderful. I’ve been reaching for the boots a Lot lately. They’re flat, they’re comfortable, they’re awesome. How can I not?
Love these looks! I’m liking that braided rope necklace.
Layers, layers, layers… they are absolutely my favorite. I love how you’ve paired a long shirt with a short sweater. Not something I would have thought of but it totally works!
Love these outfits. You are beautiful my dear. All your poses are adorable. My favoriate is the coral coat with the fur collar – such a pretty color and looks so cozy,
Without the layers, the cropped sweater and sheer blouse is SO CUTE. WOW! I am exclaiming that in all its glory only because I applaud you! I cannot wear things that are cropped. Well, not until I get on my treadmill more often. Hang on. I mean, until I start using the treadmill. Does being a Mom ever wear you out? Sometimes it’s a good reminder to take care of ourselves too. The hunter green scarf is gorgeous over the outfit alone as well. I love the colors. So rich!
So anyway! I love military jackets and think the combo is just too sweet! I love it! My go to outfit lately has been shameful. Hoodies and jeans. Lately though when I do dress up and still don’t have a lot of time, my outfits have looked like… long cozy sweater, belted, skinnies and boots with a jacket on top. Cozy enough for inside and not too warm. My only problem with this is that I only have about two of those sweaters in rotation! I need longer things lately. I don’t like showing off any skin what so ever in the winter months!
You are seriously the cutest! I love the last photo!
So, now I’m considering how I need to own a sheer, floaty shirt. And here I was, thinking my wardrobe was doing well… Anyway, I consider you quite the master layerer. I like layers, but you seem to be able to take them a whole layer further (a layer over a layer over a layer… Inception anyone?) than I manage to without looking frumpy. Jealous.
Oh I just love hats like this! I need to get one with a wide(r) brim than just a fedora. Great look to wear with it, and great advice on layering
beautiful looks, you are so good at layering, I should say you’re a pro at layering. I like the different looks you create from one single outfit. Clever! I like the bright orange coat especially!

Cute outfit! I’m never sure how to wear those cropped cardigans without showing some skin. Love the way you transitioned the outfit too! I like it all the different ways!
